- The current name of the tournament was designated in 1984 and was traditionally played on the indoor carpet at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. In 2008, the event moved to outdoor hard courts at Ariake Coliseum.
- Swiss Martina Hingis holds the record for most trophies in this tournament with 5 (1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002).
