The upward trajectory of the Boston Red Sox in recent weeks in this 2022 MLB campaign may have suffered a serious blow as it was announced that the team’s starting rotation will have a new absence in the weeks to come.
It involves pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering from inflammation in his lower back. With this, Nathan Eovaldi joins the list of absentees in the rotation along with Garrett Whitlock, who a couple of days ago also went on the disabled list.
This leaves the Red Sox with several voids in their pitching arsenal for the second half of June, in which they will face series against teams like Athletics, Cardinals, Tigers, Guardians, and Blue Jays, the latter being possibly the most important one, although it is possible that some players will already be able to recover until then.
Nathan Eovaldi will surely be missed, as he was so far the second-best pitcher on the team with a 3.16 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, with only Michael Wacha having better records than him.
What Will Become of the Boston Red Sox Rotation Now?
With these two absences, the team will have to restructure its starting rotation for the next few weeks. In Eovaldi’s absence, the Boston Red Sox called up Kutter Crawford to take the vacant job, giving the youngster a chance to prove himself in the Major Leagues.
Crawford will join Michael Wacha, Rich Hill, and Nick Pivetta as they all try to keep their momentum going after winning eight of their last ten games, which has put the team in contention for a wild card spot along with two divisional rivals such as the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays.
They say good teams are known when they get through adversity, and that’s exactly what Boston will have to do to stay afloat in an ultra-competitive division over the next few weeks, especially with just two days off between now and the end of the month.
