While just over 40 Latino players have seen action in the NFL, there are a number of quarterbacks that we can take as Latino quarterbacks because of their Hispanic roots.
In the following list, we show you the five most successful players who left a mark in their time in American soccer in the United States.
NFL Latino Quarterbacks
Jeff García
With a Mexican mother and American father, Jeff García ranks fifth on our list of Latino quarterbacks in the NFL. During his time on the circuit, he played 11 seasons and four Pro-Bowl games, three of them with the San Francisco 49ers, the team with which he experienced his best moments in the league. He finished with a 58-58 record with 25,537 air yards, 161 touchdowns and 61,6% pass completion percentage.
Mark Sánchez
Born in Long Beach, California, Mark Sánchez is of Mexican descent going back three generations. Taken by the Jets as the fifth overall pick in the 2009 Draft, the QB made history as the fourth rookie quarterback to win a playoff game and the second to do so in two consecutive seasons. After those first two years, Sánchez’s career fell apart and he played for the last time in 2018. He finished with a 37-36 record, 15,357 yards and 86 touchdowns.
Jim Plunkett
Of Mexican-American parents, Jim Plunkett is one of only two Latino quarterbacks in the NFL to lead his team to a Super Bowl win and the only one to do it a pair of times with the Raiders, being the MVP in one of those finals. In addition to being the number one overall pick in the 1971 draft by the Patriots, he is the only Hispanic to win the Heisman Trophy in the NCAA. He finished his career with a 72-72 record, 25,882 yards through the air and 164 touchdowns.
Tony Romo
Antonio Ramiro Romo, better known as Tony Romo, may be the most popular quarterback with Latino heritage on our list. However, he was not able to make that happen on the gridiron, since despite having good teams with the Dallas Cowboys and going to four Pro-Bowls, he only had one victory in the postseason.
He finished with a 78-49 record, 34,183 yards through the air, 248 touchdowns and once led the league in quarterback rating with 79,7.
Tom Flores
Tom Flores’ NFL career is the most memorable on our list. Of Mexican parents, he became the first Hispanic quarterback on the circuit in 1960 and finished his career as one of only two players in the league’s history, along with Mike Ditka, to win the Super Bowl as a player (Kansas City Chiefs), assistant coach (Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XI) and head coach (Raiders in Super Bowl XV and XVIII).
