Today, July 17, the 2022 MLB Draft was scheduled to begin, and after the first few hours of the draft, the players who were selected as first overall picks have already been defined.
As expected, four of the top five ranked players in this 2022 MLB Draft came in the early rounds, although there was also room for surprise after the Texas Rangers selected the #38 overall pick as the third overall pick.
The first overall pick was held by the Baltimore Orioles, who selected shortstop Jackson Holliday, the second overall pick in this draft. The 18-year-old is the son of former baseball player Matt Holliday, and becomes the second son of a former player to be selected as the first overall pick in the MLB Draft since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1987.
Another son of a former Major League Baseball player was selected as the second overall pick, and it was outfielder Drew Jones, son of Andruw Jones, who will be part of the Arizona D-Backs affiliate. Consequently, this 2022 MLB Draft will go down in history as the first in which two players who are the sons of former Major League Baseball players are selected as the first and second overall picks.
The Texas Rangers, who had the third overall pick in their possession, made a somewhat strange selection in choosing pitcher Kumar Rocker, ranked #38 in this 2022 MLB Draft. Rocker becomes the oldest player selected in this first round of the Draft, and he is the only baseball player born before 2000.

The Pirates selected fourth-round draft pick Termarr Johnson, who played shortstop at Mays High School in Georgia.
For their part, the Nationals picked up third place finisher Elijah Green, an outfielder from IMG Academy in Florida.
