Charles Oliveira (+135) vs Islam Makhachev (-167)
Lightweight
This is one of the most anticipated fights of the year as the lightweight title will be at stake, which the Brazilian held until his last defense (victory over Justin Gaethje) was stripped for being overweight. The Russian has not lost for 7 years (he lost only once) and this is his first fight for a crown.
“I’m going to shock the world once again,” Oliveira warned, although many believe Makhachev is on his way to becoming one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Prediction: Makhachev wins by submission.
Aljamain Sterling (-175) vs TJ Dillashaw (+138)
Bantamweight
This is Sterling’s second defense of the title he won and successfully defended against Russian Petr Yan. He has seven consecutive wins, dating back to his 2017 loss to Brazilian Marlon Moraes.
Dillashaw was champion of the category between 2014 and 2016. In 2017, he won it again, but in January 2019, after a loss to Henry Cejudo, he was suspended for two years for testing positive in a doping control. It will be his second fight after the sanction.
Prediction: Aljamain Sterling wins by KO.
Petr Yan (-315) vs Sean O’Malley (+235)
Bantamweight
Petr Yan was champion of the category in 2020, but in his first defense he lost the title by disqualification to Aljamain Sterling, who defeated him again by points in April this year. The Russian needs a win to position himself again against a Sean O’Malley who has not lost in four fights and who in his last bout applied an eye poke to his opponent that resulted in a controversial no decision.
Prediction: Petr Yan wins by points.
Beneil Dariush (+155) vs Mateusz Gamrot (-195)
Lightweight
An Iranian fighter based in the United States, Dariush has been on an upward trend thanks to seven consecutive victories, although it has been more than a year since he last stepped into the octagon. At 33 years of age, he knows that a win will position him to fight for the title.
Gamrot is Polish and was a champion in the KSW franchise. Since his arrival in UFC in 2020, he lost his first fight and then strung together four straight wins, most recently in June in Las Vegas against Arman Tsarukyan. He is, without a doubt, the candidate to win in a bout that promises to be a close one.
Prediction: Gamrot wins by points.
Katlyn Chookagian (+163) vs Manon Fiorot (-205)
Flyweight
Chookagian is one of the top flyweight contenders and has four consecutive wins on the cards. However, when she tried to go for the title she failed, in 2020, when she lost by TKO to Kyrgyzstan’s Valentina Shevchenko.
Fiorot is French and joined UFC last year. Since then, she accumulated four victories, two of them by KO. She has a slight edge in the head-to-head with Chookagian, and is very likely to be victorious in this duel to follow closely.
Prediction: Fiorot wins by TKO.
Belal Muhammad (+123) vs Sean Brady (-152)
Welterweight
Chicago native Belal Muhammad was able to exact revenge in his last fight by defeating Brazilian Vicente Luque, who knocked him out in 2016. He won seven of his last fights (the remaining one was a no decision), but only one before the limit.
On the other hand, Sean Brady is the one who comes in as the favorite to this UFC 280: his record indicates that he has never been beaten and almost half of his fights ended before the limit. He is a project to follow and is sure to continue on his winning path.
Prediction: Brady wins by submission.
