Betting on the Atlanta Falcons (-2.5)
Preseason record: 0-0
It’s the start of a new era for the Falcons this year, with Desmond Ridder expected to take over the starting gig under center for the franchise. It’s about time the Falcons find what exactly they have in Ridder even though they added veteran Taylor Heinicke to the roster this offseason. Atlanta has won seven games in each of the last two seasons and it’s looking to take a big step forward in 2023.
The Falcons are not Super Bowl contenders yet, but they could have a running back who could lead them to the grand stage down the road in the form of rookie Bijan Robinson, whom Atlanta selected eighth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Robinson was a stud for the Texas Longhorns in college and he’s quite an addition to Atlanta’s backfield that already features the rising Tyler Allgeier and veteran Cordarrelle Patterson. Atlanta’s rushing attack is a strength of the team but there could be success through the air for the Falcons against Miami’s defense that was just 28th in 2022 versus the pass.
Betting on the Miami Dolphins (+2.5)
Preseason record: 0-0
There is a real excitement for the Dolphins heading into the 2023 preseason and regular season. They are coming off a 9-8 season in which Miami also made the postseason for the first time since 2016. They had a high-flying offense in 2022 and that likely is going to be the case again for them this year with a few additions to Tua Tagovailoa’s weaponry.
Speaking of which, Tagovailoa is unlikely to play on Friday, so expect Mike White and Skylar Thompson to continue their battle for the backup QB spot. Back in the 2022 NFL season, the Dolphins finished 11th in the league with 23.8 points per game and sixth in passing yards per contest with 261.1. Miami has made some moves to address the holes in their defense, including the addition of Jalen Ramsey. The cornerback suffered a serious injury recently though, so it will be interesting to see how the secondary depth guys such as rookie Cam Smith and Kader Kohou will do against Atlanta.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Atlanta Falcons vs Miami Dolphins
Robinson and the Falcons’ ground attack show out and lead the way for the team. Taking the Falcons to win and cover.
Prediction:
The Falcons win, 17-14.
