Betting on the Denver Broncos (-5.5)
Preseason record: 0-0
The Broncos were a massive disappointment in 2022. They gave up a lot to acquire Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks, but Denver still ended up missing the playoffs with a worse record than they had a season before. Now is time for a reset for Denver, which has a new head coach in Super Bowl champion Sean Payton. The Broncos enter Friday’s game with a 5-5 record against the spread in their last 10 games in the preseason.
There’s no way but up for the Broncos, who should see the pair of Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci share quarterbacking chores this Friday. Last season, the Broncos were just 32nd in the league with 16.9 points per game, but their defense was decent, allowing only 21.1 points per outing, good for 12th overall. There is a potential for Denver to pick apart the Cardinals’ defense which was second-worst in 2022 with 26.4 points surrendered per contest.
Betting on the Arizona Cardinals (+5.5)
Preseason record: 0-0
Like the Broncos, Arizona is coming off a catastrophic campaign that led to the firing of Kliff Kingsbury. Thus, the Cardinals are now under a first-time head coach in the form of Jonathan Gannon. He was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022 and if there’s one thing we know about that Eagles’ stop unit, it’s that it was deadly.
While the personnel is different under him this time, Gannon must have worked some of his magic already on that end of the ball in Arizona. If that’s the case, we can see some improvement defensively from Arizona this Friday versus a Denver squad that turned the ball over 1.4 times per game in 2022 and averaged just a measly 0.266 per play. Colt McCoy is projected to start for the Cardinals in Week 1 of the preseason, while others are expected to see action under center as well, with Clayton Tune and David Blough still in the fold.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Denver Broncos vs Arizona Cardinals
This is the preseason, but it feels easier to trust the coaching of Payton over Gannon at this point of the year. Taking the Broncos to get the victory on Friday.
Prediction:
The Broncos win, 19-14.
