The first thing to know about the Bears is that quarterback Justin Fields is labeled doubtful for Week 8 because of a thumb injury. That likely means that Tyson Bagent will get another start. Bagent went 21/29 for 162 passing yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions while also rushing three times for 24 yards in last Sunday’s 30-12 home win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Bagent is far from elite, but he showed can do a steady job under center for Chicago, which is 13th in the NFL with 22.6 points per game. He might even have a more productive outing in Week 8, considering the Chargers’ faulty defense that is the worst in the NFL with 310 passing yards allowed per game.
Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (-8.5)
Regular season record: 2-4
The Chargers dropped their fourth game of the season in a 31-17 road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7. But going from the reigning Super Bowl champions to a fellow 2-win team that’s down to a backup quarterback could signal the end of the woes of Los Angeles – for now. The Chargers will look for Justin Herbert to lead the team’s passing attack versus the Bears, who are not all that great either against the pass.
Chicago is 29th in the NFL with 257.1 passing yards allowed per game. Since the Chargers have the better quarterback in Herbert and a seemingly more dangerous set of skill players on offense than Chicago, there’s a good chance that this potential shootout will end up with the Bolts on top. Los Angeles is eighth in the NFL with 252.3 passing yards per game and also eighth in total offense with 364.2 total yards per contest.
