D.K. Metcalf Could Leave the Seahawks for “the Right Price”

The Seattle Seahawks have repeated time after time that D.K. Metcalf is not on the market. But, other organizations don’t seem to be so sure about that.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on SportsCenter Sunday night, several teams are reportedly calling Seattle management, inquiring about the wide receiver’s services, despite publicly denying any interest in moving him.

“This is a name that is being bandied about in league circles, although there is no guarantee that anything will happen with him,” Fowler noted during his remarks. “I was told that D.K. Metcalf has received indications informally, from the team, that he will not be traded. Seattle has said publicly that they have no intention of trading him. But executives I talk to keep mentioning that they might be willing to move on for the right price or if Metcalf approves the trade. So, something is going on here; it’s hard to figure out what. But he has one year left on his rookie contract. He would need a new contract as part of a trade. That’s the hard part.”

Precisely the latter would be the main reason why Seattle could agree at the last minute to a trade for the wide receiver, since he would receive $4 million this season and it would be his last chance to become a free agent because the team does not have the option of the fifth year of his rookie contract since Metcalf was not taken in the first round.

The Seahawks appear to be in the midst of a restructuring after trading away quarterback Russell Wilson in early March and releasing star linebacker Bobby Wagner. D.K. Metcalf could be the next to leave and receive something in return for his services before losing him for free once the 2022 season culminates.

Metcalf was taken in the second round by the Seahawks in the 2019 Draft. Since his debut with the team that season, he has been a sensation thanks to his powerful physique that allows him to be one of the most skilled receivers in the league, as well as one of the strongest and fastest on the gridiron.

In each of his three seasons on the circuit he has reached 900 yards through the air, and while in 2021 he totaled his most touchdowns (12), in 2020 he recorded his best performance by hauling in 83 receptions, 1,303 air yards and 10 touchdown passes.

D.K. Metcalf and the Rumors of Change

While D.K. Metcalf may have plenty of reasons to request a trade from Seahawks management, the receiver has been quite active on his social media, as usual, noting that he hasn’t heard anything about it and even taking the rumors with some grace.

Actually, it was this Monday, when reports of a possible departure from Seattle have increased, that the receiver wrote on his Twitter account to affirm that he is still not hearing anything about it and that he remains calm.

Likewise, other players in the league have already begun to recruit him, one of them being the Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, who also sent a message to the wide receiver through his Twitter account that he would be well received in that city.
