The New York Yankees’ great season took another big step toward Major League glory on Wednesday.
Plagued by powerful hitters who have made a mess of opposing pitchers, the New York pitching staff set a new mark for home runs for June, by reaching 57.
The historic home run came off the bat of outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who connected on a pitch from Oakland Athletics starter Cole Irvin to set the mark and record home runs in five of the last six games played.
In doing so, the Yankees dethrone the 2016 Baltimore Orioles and 2019 Atlanta Braves, who, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, hit 56 home runs in the month of June in those seasons.
The Yankees still have one game left in June, against the Houston Astros, to add to their record.
The Mighty New York Yankees in the 2022 Major League Baseball Season
This season, the New York Yankees are not only the best team in all of Major League Baseball with a 56-20 record, but they also lead in several important collective categories such as home runs connected.
In that period, they have hit 126 full-length home runs, 12 more than their closest pursuers, the Atlanta Braves.
Aaron Judge, who has 29 home runs, is a key contributor to this record. Judge is emerging as a candidate for the American League MVP at the end of the season, in large part due to his comfortable home run lead.
The Yankees also have three more players with double-digit homers: Anthony Rizzo with 20, Stanton with 19 and Gleyber Torres with 13.
In total, 13 players on the team have hit at least one home run this season, something that speaks for the great performance of Aaron Boone’s team.
