Having won her second Roland Garros title, Iga Świątek loses a winning streak of 37 consecutive matches that began at the WTA 1000 Qatar Open in February 2022.
Since then, she has won Qatar, the sunshine double, i.e., Indian Wells and Miami (both WTA 1000), the Billie Jean King Cup, Stuttgart (WTA 500), the Italian Open (WTA 1000), and the Grand Slam Roland Garros.
Iga Świątek’s Winning Fortune
The Polish player joins the group of women tennis players with the longest consecutive match winning streak. The list is headed by Martina Navratilova (WTA 2022):
- Navratilova in 1984 with 74 matches
- Steffi Graf from 1989 to 1990 with 66 matches
- Navratilova, again, with 53 matches in 1987
- Margaret Court in 1972 with 57 matches
- Chris Evert with 55 matches in 1974
- Navratilova, for the third time, from 1983 to 1984 with 54 games
- Graf, in 1988 and 1987 with 46 and 45 games, respectively.
- Evert between 1975-1976 with 41 matches, a figure equaled by Navratilova in 1982.
Her Third-Round Match against Alizé Cornet at Wimbledon 2022
However, her dream of winning in the All Lawn English Club for the first time was denied by Alizé Cornet, the 32-year-old French player who mentioned that she “ages like wine” and recalled a similar victory she had against Serena Williams, also on center court, who was No. 1 at the time.
The match was decided in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Cornet started with strong swings and took advantage of the Polish player’s discomfort on the grass. After losing the first set, Świątek started the second by breaking the Frenchwoman’s serve, leading 2-0. However, Cornet advanced and quickly recovered with momentum and won the next 6 games to end the match.
Nevertheless, despite her defeat, the Pole remains optimistic about what lies ahead in her career and celebrates the victories she has had this season:
And that’s a wrap – grass season is over for me and in some way one of the most intense, challenging and exciting times in my career is over as well.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and that you will stay with me even without streaks and records. I learned a lot and I can’t wait to work even harder to be a better player and better athlete. But now? It’s time to reset and recharge.
