Due to their status as major tournaments on the PGA Tour, the BMW Championship and the tournament that precedes it in the season’s playoff often go hand in hand. This has happened again in 2022, since both competitions suffered the same increase in the amount of money distributed among the competitors.
Like the FedEx St Jude Championship, the 2022 BMW Championship will award a total of $15 million in prize money.This represents an increase of $5.5 million (57.89%) over the $9.5 million that were distributed in the competition in the 2021 edition. Likewise, this is the highest rise in the purse that the tournament has seen from one year to the next, with the previous largest increase occurring between 2008 and 2009, when the prizes to be handed were increased by $500,000.
It is also the first change the tournament has undergone financially since the 2020 edition. This time around, the winner of the BMW Championship will take home about $2.7 million, which is $990,000 more than in 2021 (also an increase of 57.89 %), when Patrick Cantlay won the tournament and walked away with $1,710,000 million.
