That LeBron James and Donald Trump don’t get along is no secret to anyone, as it’s been more than five years since the business leader and former U.S. president began attacking the Los Angeles Lakers forward.
The latest chapter in this saga was written recently when Donald Trump, during a speech in Nebraska at a “Save America” meeting. There, he showed his support for Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster, and he did not miss the opportunity to make reference to LeBron James when talking about transgender athletes.
I’ll say this to LeBron James who I don’t like very much. I’ll say, ‘LeBron, did you ever have thoughts about going woman? Because if you did I’d love to have you on my basketball team.’
Donald Trump during his speech
This kind of statements are not strange for a guy like Donald Trump, who usually causes controversy and draws attention every time he opens his mouth. In fact, this isn’t the first time Trump has talked about himself as if he were a basketball coach, either. Last year, Donald Trump mentioned that if he were to coach a women’s basketball team, it would only be with transgender players, though now he went straight for LeBron’s throat.
Why Are Donald Trump and LeBron James “Rivals”?
The history between the two dates back to 2016, when the NBA superstar showed his support for the candidacy of Hillary Clinton, a member of the Democratic Party and Donald Trump’s main rival in that year’s election.
2017 saw “King James” insult the president after he withdrew his invitation to the Golden State Warriors (NBA champions that year) to the White House, as it has been the tradition for several years, following the team’s refusal to attend the meeting.
Since then, LeBron has preferred to stay on the sidelines regarding Donald Trump, but Trump has not forgotten that old spat and wastes no opportunity to mock him or make comments regarding the player. LeBron James has yet to answer this latest provocation, and considering how he has simply passed on the subject on a recurring basis, we may not hear anything from him in this new controversy with Donald Trump.
