As of Monday, April 4, Iga Swiatek became the new WTA No. 1 after winning the title in Indian Wells and Miami Open: only the fourth player to achieve the double title in the prestigious American tournaments.

The 20-year-old Polish player has been the best player of 2022, and that is in addition to the retirement of Australian Ash Barty, who made the official announcement during the event that takes place at the Hard Rock Stadium.

In the midst of a remarkable irregularity among the most popular tennis players on the tour, everything seems to indicate that Swiatek has no rival to threaten her place at the top of the ranking, despite the presence of very talented young players such as Spain’s Paula Badosa, Britain’s Emma Raducanu, Canada’s Leylah Fernandes, among others.

The fact that she has a record of 26 wins and 3 losses in 2022, with three titles, demonstrates the current superiority of the Polish player. In addition, she has just won the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami without dropping a set.

We will have to wait to see how Swiatek will perform with the No. 1 tag, as she decided not to play the WTA Charleston.

The new No. 1 in women’s tennis revealed that she was in tears for 40 minutes after learning of the retirement of Australian Ash Barty, according to information provided by the BBC.

“I always had this vision that we would all play until we’re 35 or something, until our bodies are so tired that we can’t play anymore,” said Swiatek about the news that took the sports world by surprise.

These words affirm the enormous respect that Swiatek, the first Polish player to climb to the top of the WTA ranking, has for Barty, who retires from professional tennis after being the best in the world for 121 weeks.
