After last weekend in Formula 1 and the reactions to the British GP, we now look ahead to this weekend’s race: the Austrian Grand Prix. For this, we will review the winners of the past 5 editions of this contest. We’ll tell you all about it below.
These Are the Last 5 Winners of the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix
2017: Valtteri Bottas
To begin with, this race is run at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. In this edition, Bottas (Mercedes-AMG) won the pole position with a time of 1:04:251. In addition, there was an accident in the race in which Daniil Kvyat hit Fernando Alonso, who in turn hit Max Verstappen. The latter two eventually withdrew from the race. The rest of the race proceeded normally, and the podium featured Valtteri Bottas, Sebastian Vettel, and Daniel Ricciardo.
2018-2019: Max Verstappen
For the following two years, Dutchman Max Verstappen was crowned winner of the race. It was sunny weather in 2018 and Pole was won by 2017 champion Valtteri Bottas. However, Verstappen came in first, Kimi Räikkönen second, and Sebastian Vettel third.
On the other hand, in 2019, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was the poleman and finished second, with Bottas completing the podium of this Formula 1 race. In addition, the Dutchman had a time of 1:07:475 on lap 60 and was the fastest of the race.
2020: Valtteri Bottas
Two years ago, during the pandemic, Bottas was crowned again at this circuit, starting from pole position in first place. Although Hamilton, his teammate at the time, finished second, he was penalized to fourth place for a touch with Albon. Additionally, Checo Pérez was penalized 5 seconds for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane. Consequently, Leclerc took second place and Norris third.
2021: Max Verstappen
Finally, last year‘s race moved Verstappen into a tie with Frenchman Alain Prost for the most wins in this circuit. This has been one of the Dutchman’s best performances, as he took pole position, the fastest lap (1:06:200 in 62), led from start to finish, and took the win. Thus, Bottas came second and Norris third, a podium similar to that of the previous year.
Will Verstappen win his fourth Austrian Grand Prix crown this year? We will only know this Sunday, 71 laps later.
