Yet another star tennis player will be out of action for a considerable time due to a medical procedure. Matteo Berrettini just underwent surgery on his right hand, which automatically rules him out of the next three Masters 1000 tournaments: Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
“Following the advice of medical experts, my team and I have determined that it is crucial that I do not rush my recovery process,” the Italian player said in an Instagram post.
The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up added in the same text, “Therefore, we have decided that I should withdraw from the Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome tournaments to ensure I have the right amount of time to return to my highest level.”
Finally, the 25-year-old European expressed his frustration at having to withdraw from the Masters 1000 clay-court tournament in his home country. “Withdrawing from these events, especially Rome, was a difficult decision to make. However, it is the best choice for ensuring many more years of high-level competition for the most prestigious trophies.” he stated.
This decision by the current world number six follows an uneven start to the 2022 season; the sole highlight was his performance at the Australian Open’s semifinal, where he was defeated after a thrilling four-set battle with eventual champion Rafael Nadal.
Matteo Berrettini’s ATP record in 2022
The Italian tennis player will be one of the major absentees in the next three major ATP events prior to Roland Garros, after undergoing surgery to repair a hand aching that significantly limited his performance in the first three months of 2022.
In the current campaign, Berrettini has a record of 9 wins and 6 defeats, with his arrival in the semifinals in Australia being his most important performance so far.
