The Pittsburgh Steelers and their new general manager, Omar Khan, made a great defensive move on Wednesday after securing Minkah Fitzpatrick, one of the best safeties on the circuit today, for a good number of seasons.

As announced by the same organization, the contract extension will be for the next four years, while ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that it is worth 73.6 million, 36 of them fully guaranteed.

We are very excited to sign Minkah to a new contract. He is one of the best safeties in the NFL, and we are thrilled that he will be in Pittsburgh for at least the next five years. When we traded him, we knew he was going to be an integral part of our defense and we look forward to that continuing as we prepare for next season.

The extension, which will take effect beginning in the 2023 season, makes Minkah Fitzpatrick the highest-paid safety in NFL history by averaging $18.4 million, surpassing the Seahawks’ Jamal Adams, who is averaging $17.65 million.

It is worth remembering that Fitzpatrick arrived in 2019, via change, from the Miami Dolphins and was under contract until the next season, in which he will earn 10.6 million.

I am very excited. I’m still a bit in shock. It is a blessing. I’m so excited and this is just the beginning… I love the history of the Steelers and what it stands for. The standard to which we are held. Coach (Mike) Tomlin sustains us, on and off the field and we have a standard of winning playoff games, division titles and championship games.

Minkah Fitzpatrick’s Numbers

In four seasons in the NFL, Minkah Fitzpatrick has more than met the challenge of being acquired as the 11th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Fitzpatrick has seen action in 64 of the 65 games he played, recording 13 interceptions, four forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and two interceptions returned for 96-yard touchdowns.

He also adds two visits to the Pro-Bowl and on two occasions he earned first-team All-Pro selections.
