The Player of the Week, presented by Continental Tire, this Week 23 of the MLS went to Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuaín for his outstanding performance in the 4-4-4 draw between Inter Miami and Cincinnati.
Higuaín is playing his third season with Miami, and it seems that the intention is to surpass the previous one. The former Real Madrid and Juventus player is shining in this 2022, as he knows how to do, with goals. He has seven goals to his name and one assist, making him the second player on his team with the most goals so far this season.
Before the game on Saturday, July 30, he had only four goals, but he stole the show by scoring a hat-trick in the first 45 minutes.
First Hat-Trick in MLS Makes Pipita Higuaín MLS Player of the Week 23
It was a historic day for “Pipita” Higuaín as this was his first hat-trick in MLS. His performance was brilliant, and one of his three goals was a real goal.
It was the 22nd minute when he went to take a free kick from outside the box and used his powerful right foot to score a gem that left the crowd in the stadium and those watching the game on television open-mouthed. Just look what a great goal the Argentinian scored.
A few minutes later, after the rival had tied the score 1-1, he again appeared to help Inter Miami regain the lead, this time doing the job inside the six-yard box, showing his skills to get the defender and goalkeeper off his back.
Their third goal came in stoppage time of the first half, after a penalty kick was awarded in favor of Miami. The Argentine took the ball and went for it, converting the spot kick for his team’s third goal of the night.
In three seasons, Gonzalo Higuaín has 20 goals in Miami’s regular season jersey and is the first player on the team to reach that number.
This Player of the Week award is the second he has received since he has been in MLS, the first coming in Week 5 of the 2021 season.
This season, he and teammate Leonardo Campana are the only two players who have been named Player of the Week.
On Wednesday, August 3, Inter Miami will visit San Jose Earthquakes, and we could see another good performance of “Pipita” taking advantage of this momentum.
