Bad news for golf fans ahead of the biggest tournament of the year. Phil Mickelson will not be able to play the 2022 Masters, signifying his first absence from the great event since the 1994 season, according to information provided by journalist Dylan Dethier of Golf Magazine.

This news comes after the 51-year-old announced his intention to stay away from tournaments, after his controversial comments about the LIV Golf Invitational event in Saudi Arabia leaked.

Mickelson is a three-time green jacket winner, so his presence will be greatly missed at the legendary Augusta National Course that year after year hosts the best golfers in the world.

The 2022 Masters will take place from April 7 to 10, with Spain’s Jon Rahm as the big favorite for the title for the simple fact of being the number one in the world since July 2020. Also, figures who always generate great expectation among the public will be competing such as: Jordan Spieth, Sergio García, Rory McIlroy, among others.

Despite never reaching the top of the rankings, the legendary American golfer has one of the most brilliant careers in the history of this sport.

“Phil” joined the PGA in 1992 and since then he has starred in memorable victories in the most important tournaments worldwide. He has accumulated 57 titles after 30 years of experience in professional golf.

The left-hander born in San Diego, California, was world number two in 2001 and could not climb further because of the presence of Tiger Woods, who had already established himself as the “almost invincible” man of this sport.

Among Mickelson’s accomplishments are his three green jackets at the Masters (2004, 2006 and 2010), two titles at the PGA Championship (2005 and 2021) and one at the Open Championship (2013).
