Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (-4)
Preseason record: 0-0
The 49ers fell short of reaching the Super Bowl last season, but they remain among the serious contenders not just in the NFC but in the entire league this year. San Francisco has an intriguing quarterback composition, with Brock Purdy currently projected to start. Meanwhile, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are battling for the backup spot with Brandon Allen also in the mix. Lance and Darnold likely will have the most snaps in this game against the Raiders, and each of them is capable of shining in a preseason contest.
Star running back Christian McCaffrey could see minimal action, while Elijah Mitchell might be held back as he is questionable at the time of this writing. There’s Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price to handle the duties on the ground though for the Niners, who rushed for 136.8 yards per game in 2022 – seventh-best in the entire league.
Betting on the Las Vegas Raiders (+4)
Preseason record: 0-0
The Raiders have a new starting quarterback in town and it’s someone the 49ers are very familiar with: Jimmy Garoppolo. Jimmy G, however, is not going to see action on Sunday. Instead, expect Brian Hoyer, Aidan O’Connell, and Chase Garbers under center for the Raiders, who went undefeated in four games in last year’s NFL preseason. They also covered the spread in all of those contests. Las Vegas is also 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 preseason games overall.
O’Connell has gotten some good reviews in training camp, and that could translate in this preseason matchup versus the Niners. With the Josh Jacobs situation, the Raiders might get running back second-year running back Zamir White plenty of reps in the preseason. He rushed for only 70 yards in 2022 but a bigger workload is in line for him in 2023, especially if Jacobs misses time due to his holdout.
