Betting on the Chicago Bears (+3)
Regular season record: 0-1
New season, same result for the Bears. At least that’s what it looked like last Sunday when Chicago suffered a 38-20 home loss at the hands of the first iteration of the post-Aaron Rodgers Green Bay Packers in Week 1. It was the 11th-straight loss for the Bears franchise and also the 10th in a row versus their rivals in the NFC North division.
Justin Fields was again everything for Chicago despite changes made by the team in the offseason, as the quarterback passed for 216 passing yards and a touchdown with an interception on 24/37 completions, while also leading the team on the ground with 59 rushing yards on nine carries. Still, there’s promise in Chicago, with Darnell Mooney scoring a touchdown with 53 receiving yards on four receptions and seven targets. Mooney can have a bigger day downfield in Week 2 against the Buccaneers defense that got burned by Justin Jefferson last Sunday.
Betting on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3)
Regular season record: 1-0
How about the Buccaneers? Bake Mayfield led Tampa Bay to its first win of the season right from the get-go, as he passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions on 21/34 completions in a 20-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on the road last Sunday. Mayfield showed great chemistry with Tampa Bay’s top receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in Week 1 with the former coming away with 66 receiving yards and a touchdown, while the latter racked up 51 receiving yards on five receptions.
Mayfield is no Tom Brady, but people should not forget that Evans and Godwin remain a dangerous tandem downfield. They can really raise the ceiling of an offense. Defensively, the Buccaneers might be licking their chops over the prospect of having success in the pocket against the Bears, who gave up four sacks for a loss of 27 yards in Week 1.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Chicago Bears vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
