Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (+3)
Preseason record: 0-0
The Chargers have a high-powered passing attack in 2022, with Justin Herbert leading it. The Bolts passed for 268.7 yards per game third-best in the NFL. But it was also a product of a pass-heavy offense that ate up on rushing opportunities for the team. Their top running back was the prolific pass-catching tailback in Austin Ekeler, who is likely to see zero snaps on Saturday.
Joshua Kelley, Isaiah Spiller, and Larry Rountree III should be busy, though, as well as rookie wideout Quentin Johnston, who’s got the potential to shine in Year 1. He was selected 21st overall by the Chargers in the 2023 NFL Draft after he registered 1,069 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 60 catches last year with TCU. Another intriguing newcomer for the Chargers is Johnston’s TCU teammate Max Duggan. Their familiarity with each other could be the biggest x-factor for the Chargers in the game versus the Rams.
Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (-3)
Preseason record: 0-0
Don’t expect to see the likes of Matthew Stafford and Aaron Donald play on Saturday and the rest of the preseason. Rams head coach Sean McVay already went on record in saying that we’re not going to see such players on the field in games before the regular season. The Rams are 5-4-1 against the spread in their last 10 games in the preseason.
Brett Rypien and Stetson Bennett, meanwhile, will continue their intriguing battle as Stafford’s Chief backup. Rypien has the edge in NFL experience, but Bennet is a proven winner after helping lead the Georgia Bulldogs to back-to-back national titles before turning pro. Also, with Cooper Kupp dealing with a hamstring issue, there will more attention on the wide receivers Tutu Atwell, Lance McCutcheon, and Austin Trammell in the preseason.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Los Angeles Chargers vs Los Angeles Rams
Stetson Bennett gets the better of Max Duggan again, as the Rams beat the Chargers in this game.
Prediction:
The Rams win, 19-16.
