Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (+3)
Preseason record: 0-0
Just several months removed from winning the Super Bowl by beating the Philadelphia Eagles last February, the Chiefs will be back in action again this coming Sunday, albeit without many of their top players. Patrick Mahomes and other starters are not expected to play against the Saints, but Kansas City should still look formidable.
Backup veteran Blaine Gabbert, Shane Buechele, and Chris Oladokun likely will share duties behind the center. The Chiefs had the highest-scoring offense in the league in 2023, as they averaged 29.2 points per game and 404.6 total yards per contest – also No. 1 in the NFL. But don’t sleep on their defense, too. In the 2022 NFL preseason, the Chiefs allowed just 14.3 points per contest, the third-best overall. Rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice can turn heads in the preseason for the Chiefs, as he tries to find and improve his fit with Kansas City. He had 1,355 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 96 receptions last year with the SMU Mustangs.
Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-3)
Preseason record: 0-0
The Saints struggled mightily in 2022, but there’s hope that things will be better for them this year. For one, they have a new quarterback in former Las Vegas Raiders starter Derek Carr. Jameis Winston slides to being a backup, while Hake Haener and Taysom Hill round out the preseason depth chart of the QBs in New Orleans. Last year, the Saints were just 19th in the league with 19.4 points per game in the regular season and only 16.7 points in the preseason.
But like the Chiefs, New Orleans’ 2022 preseason defense was pretty good, based on the fact that it was eighth with 15.7 points allowed per contest. Speaking of defense, former Clemson Tigers star and Saints first-round pick rookie defensive tackle Bryan Bresee will look to shine against the reigning Super Bowl champions. New Orleans has also met the Chiefs in the preseason a total of 10 times and has a winning 6-4 record in the head-to-head matchup.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Kansas City Chiefs vs New Orleans Saints
The Saints will take advantage of playing in front of a friendly atmosphere at home and surprise the Chiefs with a stellar performance to come away with a victory.
Prediction:
The Saints win, 21-14.
