Betting on the New York Jets (-1)
Every Jets fan wants to see Aaron Rodgers take snaps and make throws, but that will have to wait because it’s more than likely that New York will give the keys to the offense to the triumvirate of Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle, and Chris Streveler. Rodgers is the clear-cut No. 1 QB of the Jets.
There’s just not an angle meaningful enough for the Jets to risk the future Hall of Famer in this game versus the Browns. In any case, the Jets probably are going to be carried more in this meeting by their defense that was so dependable in 2022. Last season, the Jets were second overall with just 18.6 points allowed per game and fourth with only 311.1 total yards per contest. While the defense of the Jets this Thursday might not be as sharp as it regularly was in the 2022 regular season, it could be enough to rattle the Browns, who turned the ball over 1.2 times per game last year.
Betting on the Cleveland Browns (+1)
Just as interesting as the Jets are the Browns. Deshaun Watson will be ready to go by Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. But for this game, Watson will just be roaming the sidelines or watching from afar because it’s going to be Joshua Dobbs, rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Kellen Mond alternately handling the rock.
Thompson-Robinson was selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Browns. He threw for over 10,000 yards with 88 touchdown passes in five years with the UCLA Bruins before turning pro. As a team that ran the air out of the ball in 2022, it will be interesting to see the ground attack of the Browns against the Jets. Nick Chubb will likely not see action versus the Jets, but Jerome Ford, Demetric Felton Jr., John Kelly Jr., and Nate McCrary will be there to contribute to the team’s backfield that generated 146.5 rushing yards and 1.1 rushing touchdowns per game in 2022.
El Jefe’s Prediction on NFL Hall of Fame Game 2023
Don’t forget that this game will be played in Ohio, so the Browns might feel more at home on Thursday than the Jets. Taking the Browns to win this game by at least a touchdown.
Prediction:
The Browns win, 23-17.
