Betting on the New York Jets (+3.5)
Preseason record: 0-1
The Jets are all warmed up. They already have a preseason under their belt this year, albeit after a 21-16 loss in the Hall of Fame Game against the Cleveland Browns last week. The Jets are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 preseason games.
That being said, there have been some positive takeaways from that game for New York. For one, backup quarterback Zach Wilson looked impressive in limited action, going 3 of 5 for 65 yards, with one of his pass completion being a highlight toss to Malik Taylor. But look for the Jets to try to improve their ground attack this Saturday after rushing for just 53 yards on 23 carries versus the Browns. The Panthers’ run defense wasn’t really good in 2022, as it allowed over 120 rushing yards per game that season.
Betting on the Carolina Panthers (-3.5)
Preseason record: 0-0
Rookie quarterback Bryce Young is all the focus for Panthers fans in Week 1 of the preseason – and perhaps the rest of the year. Selected first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Young will look to show that his game translates into the pros. The Panthers are 5-4-1 against the spread in their last 10 games in the preseason.
Last year with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Young passed for 3,328 yards and 32 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Matt Corral and Jake Luton could also see action under center Saturday for the Panthers. Carolina quarterbacks will also look to hook up with rookie wide receiver Jonathan Mingo against the Jets’ defense that gave up two receiving touchdowns to Cleveland Browns’ downfield weapons in the HOF Game.
El Jefe’s Prediction on New York Jets vs Carolina Panthers
Like I said earlier, the Jets are warmed up. But it’s also not lost on me that a rookie Browns QB lit them up with some good plays in the HOF Game. In other words, look for Bryce Young to shine versus the Jets’ defense early.
Prediction:
The Panthers win, 20-17.
