The Lions are about to find out right away whether what they’re made of is good enough to hang with the elite in the 2023 NFL season. That’s because they will be facing the reigning and defending Super Bowl champions on the road right from the get-go in Week 1.
Detroit missed the playoffs last season but took a big step forward by finishing with a 9-8 record and brandishing a lethal offense that was fifth in the league with an average of 26.6 points per game. Jared Goff leads the Lions’ attack after a resurgent 2022 campaign in which he passed for 4,438 yards and 29 touchdowns against seven interceptions. Gone are Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift, but the backfield has new faces in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, a pair that could prove to be effective for Detroit.

With Patrick Mahomes still at the top of his game with quality weapons around him, Kansas City projects to run another high-flying attack in 2023. Last season, the Chiefs were among the few teams who averaged more points than the Lions.
In fact, the Chiefs were No. 1 in the entire league with 29.2 points per game and also tops with 404.6 total yards per contest. Kansas City is going to be just fine on that end of the field. The Chiefs will be an acid test for the Lions’ defense, which is still looking highly questionable after allowing the fifth-most points per game (25.1) in 2022.
