Betting on the Detroit Lions (+4.5)
Preseason record:1-1
The Lions were one of the highest-scoring teams in the NFL last season but you will not be able to tell that based on their performance in their 25-7 loss at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars last Saturday. But of course, preseason barely means anything when assessing the overall health of a team’s offense – or defense, for that matter.
Jared Goff did not see action in Week 2, and that might be the case again this coming Friday, with Detroit likely to let Nate Sudfeld and Teddy Bridgewater split the quarterbacking chores. Bridgewater debuted in Lions uniform in the Jaguars game and struggled, going 5/11 for just 34 passing yards. Still, there’s room for optimism for a better outing from the veteran, with a date against the winless Panthers ahead.
The Lions are 2-1-1 against the spread in their last four road games in the preseason.
Betting on the Carolina Panthers (-4.5)
Preseason record: 0-2
As mentioned earlier, the Panthers are still seeking a win in the 2023 NFL preseason. That said, the more important thing for Carolina is the acclimatization of rookie quarterback Bryce Young to the pro level.
He struggled in Week 1’s 27-0 home loss to the New York Jets and did not exactly blow minds away in Week 2’s 21-19 road defeat at the hands of the New York Giants, but at least he did better, Young went 3/6 for 35 passing yards against the Giants. It’s uncertain whether the Panthers will let Young and their starters play against the Lions, but there can still be success waiting for Carolina’s attack against Detroit’s defense that is allowing 307.5 total yards per game in the preseason.
The Panthers are 6-4 against the spread in their last 10 home preseason contests.
