Betting on the Carolina Panthers (+3.5)
Regular season record: 0-0
The Panthers went winless in the preseason, but that shouldn’t at all define what they’re capable of. Carolina is now ready to give rookie quarterback Bryce Young a full load under center after playing him sparingly in the season.
The expectation is that the Panthers’ offense will improve this year not just because of Young but also due to the arrival of running back Miles Sanders and wide receiver Adam Thielen. Both Sanders and Thielen are proven performers. As a team, the Panthers might take some time to take shape offensively, but its current form might be enough to rattle the Falcons, who weren’t exactly an elite defensive squad in 2022.
The Panthers are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games in the regular season.
Betting on the Atlanta Falcons (-3.5)
Regular season record: 0-0
The Falcons are also a team in transition. But unlike the Panthers, they are not exactly breaking in a rookie under center as a starter. This season, the job as QB1 for Atlanta is in the hands of Desmond Ridder, who was taken by the team in last year’s NFL Draft. The most intriguing — and potentially the most dangerous — player for the Falcons on offense, however, is a rookie in the form of former Texas Longhorns running back Bijan Robinson.
Many are singing praises for Robinson, who will get a monster share of touches in the rushing attack of Atlanta that ranked 10th in the league in 2022 with 130.0 rushing yards per game. The Falcons’ defense might also see some improvements after making some additions in the offseason with veteran defensive ends Calais Campbell and Bud Dupree coming over.
Atlanta is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 games in the regular season.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Carolina Panthers vs Atlanta Falcons
