Betting on the New England Patriots (-3)
Regular season record: 0-2
For the first time after several years, the Patriots started a season with back-to-back losses. New England is winless through two weeks of the season after losses to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 (25-20) and to the Miami Dolphins (24-17) in Week 2. Both those games were played in Foxborough, so perhaps a change in scenery is what’s going to cure the malaise of New England, which is averaging just 18.5 points per game.
The pair of wide receiver DaVante Parker and Hunter Henry will come to East Rutherford on the heels of decent performances in the Miami game, with the two combining for 109 receiving yards on 12 catches and 15 targets. Hunter also scored a touchdown for his second of the season. Defensively, the Patriots can get excited over the prospect of facing Zach Wilson, who remains an unstable presence in the pocket for the Jets.
Betting on the New York Jets (+3)
Regular season record: 1-1
Just when many thought that the Jets would be fine despite Zach Wilson starting in lieu of Aaron Rodgers, New York got destroyed in Week 2 by the Dallas Cowboys on the road, 30-10. Wilson went just 12/27 for 170 passing yards and a touchdown against three interceptions in that game, while also getting sacked three times for a loss of 19 yards.
Moving the chains seems a harder task indeed for the Jets without Rodgers, but the team can remain confident in Garrett Wilson, who had 83 receiving yards and a touchdown on just two catches in the Cowboys game. Nevertheless, it was not that long ago when New York’s defense jammed the Buffalo Bills’ attack, which was a great example of just how potent really is the Jets’ defense.
El Jefe’s Prediction on New England Patriots vs New York Jets
The Patriots lost to Miami but showed promise defensively, particularly rookie Christian Gonzalez, who held Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill in check. Gonzalez and the Pats’ defense will find it easier to contain Parker and Henry, as New England gets their first win of the season.
Prediction:
The Patriots win, 21-17.
