Betting on the New England Patriots (+3)
Preseason record: 0-1
The Patriots lost to the Houston Texans at home in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL preseason, 20-9. Despite the loss, there are some positive takeaways for New England from that contest. One of which is the amazing performance of rookie quarterback Malik Cunningham, who went 3/4 for 19 passing yards and led the Pats with 34 rushing yards and a touchdown on just five carries. Meanwhile, Bailey Zappe looked good under center despite taking two sacks, as he went 12/14 for 79 passing yards.
Zappe can turn more heads with a much better play in Week 2. Although Mac Jones is the QB1, Zappe will be fully motivated. The Patriots struggled in finishing drives, going just 3/12 on third downs and 1/2 in the red zone. On defense, look for first-round pick Christian Gonzalez can shine anew after recording three tackles and a forced fumble.
Betting on the Green Bay Packers (-3)
Preseason record: 1-0
The Packers are entering their first season post-Aaron Rodgers era, and their first game in the preseason since parting ways with the future Hall of Fame quarterback was a success, as Green Bay took down the Cincinnati Bengals on the road in Week 1, 36-10.
Sean Clifford passed for 208 yards and a touchdown on 20/26 completions, but had a pair of interceptions. He will look to clean his errors, while Jordan Love might see a few snaps again. Love, the QB1 of the Packers, went 7/10 for 46 yards and a touchdown. What’s important is that Green Bay showed so much life on offense even without Rodgers in its life now. Rookie running back Emanuel Wilson can steal the show in Week 2 after burning rubber for 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six carries in the Cincinnati game. The Packers are 2-1 against the spread in their last three preseason games.
El Jefe’s Prediction on New England Patriots vs Green Bay Packers
The Patriots struggled offensively in Week 1 because of a banged-up offensive line that could be healthier this time around. Taking the Patriots to cover.
Prediction:
The Packers win, 21-19.
