Betting on the Las Vegas Raiders (-3.5)
Preseason record: 1-0
The Raiders looked fine right out of the gate in the 2023 NFL preseason, as they dismantled the San Francisco 49ers at home, 34-7 in Week 1. Aidan O’Connell showed flashes of brilliance in that game, passing for 141 yards and a touchdown on 15/18 completions. That kind of pop from under center is a big plus for the Raiders, who are not expected to play Jimmy Garropolo in the preseason.
The ground attack of Las Vegas also shined, with Zamir White and Sincere McCormick rushing for a touchdown each versus the Niners. With Josh Jacobs still a no-show in training camp, the Raiders will continue to see what they have in the backfield. The two running backs must be salivating over the prospect of facing the Rams’ defense that allowed over 200 rushing yards last week. It was also great for the Raiders to see their defense in sharp form, as it had four sacks and an interception last week. The Raiders head to Week 2 with a 5-0 straight-up and 5-0 against the spread records in their last five preseason games.
Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (+3.5)
Preseason record: 0-1
The Rams could not keep up with the Chargers last week, as they absorbed a 34-17 loss to their LA rivals. But they must have liked some of the stuff they saw from rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett, who went 17/29 for 191 passing yards and a touchdown. He absorbed three sacks, but Rams head coach Sean McVay still loved the play of the former Georgia Bulldogs star. “I thought he did a nice job,” McVay said after the contest about Bennett, per AP. “There were some tough situations. You could see the athleticism where he escaped.”
Tyler Johnson paced the Rams downfield on offense with 70 receiving yards on five catches and seven targets in Week 1. A better performance from the Rams’ offensive line can further unlock the true potential of Bennett and the team’s rushing attack that produced 99 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. The Over is 3-1 in the Rams’ last four preseason games.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Las Vegas Raiders vs Los Angeles Rams
O’Connell was impressive in Week 1 and he can be expected to shine anew against the Rams’ seemingly leaky defense in the presason. Also watch out for White to have a productive game.
Prediction:
The Raiders win, 23-17.
