Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-3)
Preseason record: 1-0
The Saints went big with their passing attack in Week 1 of the preseason to take down the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs at home last Sunday to the tune of a 26-24 score. New Orleans played three quarterbacks, including Derek Carr, but it was mostly Jake Haener and Jameis Winston, who shared the duties under center. All in all, the Saints had 239 passing yards and each quarterback had a touchdown apiece. Veteran wide receiver Michael Thomas also played, catching one of two targets for 16 yards. He is getting closer to his optimal form and he could be featured again this week versus the Chargers. New Orleans got what they wanted on offense and it could only get better going forward in the preseason. The Saints have seen the total hit the Under in six of their last 10 games in the preseason.
Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (+3)
Preseason record: 1-0
If the Saints want a quarterback showcase in Week 2, the Chargers can oblige to that by going with Easton Stick again. The backup went 14/21 for 109 passing yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions and zero sacks in their 34-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams on the road in Week 2. But the run game of the Bolts in that game can’t also be ignored.
The Chargers burned rubber for 214 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. Elijah Dotson had 92 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Joshua Kelley and Isaiah Spiller were both efficient with 54 and 27 rushing yards on nine and five carries, respectively. That sounds like danger for the Saints’ defense which allowed the Chiefs to average 4.9 yards per carry. The Chargers have covered the spread in five of their last 10 preseason games, dating back to 2019.
