Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-3)
Regular season record: 1-0
The Saints started the Derek Carr era the right way, as they scored a 16-15 win over the Tennessee Titans at home in Week 1. While they did not necessarily explode offensively, scoring-wise, the Saints saw Carr pass for 305 passing yards and a touchdown with only an interception on 23/33 completions. The pass protection for Carr can definitely improve but the bottom line after the season-opener is that New Orleans looked great overall on that side of the ball.
The trio of Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Michael Thomas shined in Week 1 and could again in Week 2 versus the Panthers. But New Orleans’ defense could end up being the real hero again for the Saints. The Panthers have a rookie quarterback who is still trying to find his footing in the NFL. Carolina’s stop unit can capitalize on that.
Betting on the Carolina Panthers (+3)
Regular season record: 0-1
Bryce Young is still working his way to stability in the NFL. In his debut in Week 1, he went just 20/38 for 146 passing yards and a touchdown with a pair of interceptions in the Panthers’ 24-10 road loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He was also sacked twice for a loss of 19 yards. Until Young gets it together, the Panthers will have to continue asking for more from their defense.
Fortunately for Carolina, its stop unit seems to be doing just fine overall through a game in the season. Against the Falcons, the Panthers’ D recorded four sacks and held Atlanta to just 2/10 on third downs. Atlanta also produced just a measly output of 221 total yards and just 13 first downs. Considering that the Saints allowed four sacks to Tennessee, Brian Burns and New Orleans’ pass rushers must have their eyes lighting up already.
El Jefe’s Prediction on New Orleans Saints vs Carolina Panthers
The Saints will not have an easy time establishing a rhythm in this game because of Carolina’s defense, but they will execute well just enough to escape with a win.
Prediction:
The Saints win, 21-17.
