Guillermo Ochoa, goalkeeper of Club América, spoke to the media at a press conference and dared to make a request to the directors of Liga MX.
Guillermo Ochoa is living his second stage with the Águilas del América, after having spent several years in the Old Continent, and upon his return he found several novelties. Although he returned to Mexican soccer in 2019, now, three years later, he dares to talk about something he considers important: the Copa Libertadores.
Mexican teams ceased to be invited to Conmebol competitions as of 2017, after Liga MX itself complained of problems with the annual calendar and extra wear and tear on players due to the long distances involved in competing in South America.
Guillermo Ochoa believes that being able to compete with Conmebol teams can be beneficial for Mexican soccer.
Hopefully we can get out of that bubble and one day be able to compete again against the South American teams. It will help us more than playing against Central America and the United States.
Guillermo Ochoa Says It’s Complicated to Follow Liga MX From the Outside
The 36-year-old goalkeeper also criticized the options available to watch Mexican soccer with the emergence of streaming platforms.
The goalkeeper considers that this makes it difficult to follow the Aztec football, as he assured that outside Mexico it is difficult to watch the matches, and now it is something that is happening in the country itself.
If it is difficult to see it outside of Mexico, now it is difficult to see it here too. It gets complicated with so many places, so many platforms, and having to pay to watch a game. People don’t know where to turn to watch a game when they are not at the stadium.
Ochoa spoke about his experience in Europe and said that they only know a couple of Mexican soccer clubs there:
The line to follow in the future is to seek to unify the Mexican league so that it can be seen in other places. I had the chance to experience it in Europe, and it’s complicated, the same teammates and clubs don’t know the Mexican league that well, they know one or two clubs.
While Mexican clubs stopped participating in the Copa Libertadores in 2016, Club América’s last participation was in the 2011 edition, that is, 11 years ago. They reached the round of 16 but did not advance past that stage as they were eliminated by Santos of Brazil by a 1-0 aggregate score. Guillermo Ochoa was in goal for the team.
