The Liga MX 2022 has 18 teams, but only four of them are considered truly great, either because of their history or the number of titles they have in their trophy cabinets.
América, Chivas, Cruz Azul and Pumas are the big four in Mexican soccer, two from the nation’s capital and only one from the provinces.
These big four of Liga MX have a certain resemblance to some alcoholic beverages, and in this article we explain why.
1.- Club América
América is the team that has won the most titles in the history of Mexican professional soccer, with 13 leagues in its trophy cabinet, and is therefore considered the greatest. But just as they have gained followers due to his successes, they have also made some enemies. They are as loved as they are hated, just like tequila.
Tequila is an alcoholic beverage, known throughout the world as being of Mexican origin. And just as this famous drink is known, so is América. Both may appeal to a sector of the population, but there will always be others who opt for something different.
2.- Chivas
Guadalajara or Chivas Rayadas, as you prefer to call them, is the second team in Liga MX with most titles: they have 12 leagues; and they are also known as the most popular team.
Chivas is the most Mexican team, as it has a unique rule which states that it can only have Mexican players in its ranks. This is more than a rule, it is a tradition, and thanks to this we can compare it to mezcal.
Mezcal is an alcoholic beverage of Mexican origin and is known as an elixir full of history and tradition. It is distilled from agave or ‘maguey’ and, when fermentation is ready, it has 45% of alcohol, so it is recommended to drink a little at a time.
3.- Cruz Azul
Cruz Azul became Liga MX champion again in 2021, after 23 years without being champion. That title represented their ninth Liga MX crown and made them the fourth with most victories.
We have chosen ‘tepache’ to compare the “Máquina Cementera” with a Mexican alcoholic beverage.
‘Tepache’ does not have a high percentage of alcohol, so it is not contemplated for the celebrations, something similar to what happened with Cruz Azul in the last two decades, who were out of the Liga MX celebrations.
Its taste is sweet, and it is made from corn, some usually add some fruit to add a different flavor, as well as color.
4.- Pumas
Pumas has seven titles, and, despite the fact that there are teams like Toluca and León that have more (10 and 8, respectively), the university team has not relinquished its place in history as one of the four greats of Liga MX.
Pumas is the team of the country’s top university and of course has a lot of history. They are not usually among the winners consistently, but perhaps there lies the value of each of their titles. They also wear a white uniform with golden details, and we get to compare them with the ‘pulque’.
‘Pulque’ is a white alcoholic beverage with a frothy consistency, since it is produced from the fermentation of the mead of the ‘maguey’, which takes between 8 and 12 years. That’s pretty close to the time Pumas have had without being champion in Liga MX. It is not as strong an alcoholic beverage as ‘tequila’ or ‘mezcal’, since it has between 4 and 6 degrees of alcohol.
