Several signings have already been announced for the 2022 Laver Cup, which will be played from September 23-25 at the O2 Arena in London. In this article we tell you everything that is known so far and which players will be part of which team.
Who Has Been Called for the 2022 Laver Cup?
Team Europe
Björn Borg, the captain of Team Europe, has selected one of the big four, Andy Murray, to join the six-player squad. Regarding Murray, Borg mentioned that he is “a dedicated, fierce and inspirational player, who has re-established himself at the top of the game,” which is why he was chosen for the 2022 Laver Cup.
Last year’s team consisted of Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Matteo Berrettini, and Andrey Rublev. This year, however, it was announced that Nadal and Federer will return to play for the same team.
Team World
In 2021 the World team consisted of Nick Kyrgios, Reilly Opelka, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Diego Schwartzman, John Isner, and Denis Shapovalov. The team captain is John McEnroe, former rival of Björn Borg. However, for the 2022 Laver Cup, Auger-Aliassime and Schwartzman will repeat. Nonetheless, McEnroe mentioned that the team would be joined by the highest ranked American, Taylor Fritz.
Fritz participated in the first edition of the Laver Cup in Geneva in 2019. Referring to a game in which he almost led his team to victory, he mentioned that “it was one of the greatest triumphs of my career.”
Thus, both teams have three players per side and half of the players are still to be chosen, which we assume would depend on how Wimbledon results. In its first edition, the tournament was played in Geneva, then in Boston, and this year it will be played in London. In addition, the locations for 2023 and 2024 have already been announced: Vancouver and Berlin, respectively.
With things like this, we are in expectation of what will be the Laver Cup 2022, as we are only a month and a few days away from the tournament, so the rest of the players should be defined soon.
