Marcus Davenport, defensive end for the New Orleans Saints, did not have a pleasant offseason, as part of his little finger had to be amputated due to an infection.
The Saints’ player had had recurring problems with his pinky since it was torn in 2016 during his junior year at college. Last year, he decided to put an end to the discomfort and underwent three surgeries to correct his problem, but that led to a more serious one.
US media have reported that Marcus Davenport has lost part of his pinky, after breaking a plate from a previous surgery and experiencing an infection. Doctors decided to amputate the upper half of the finger in order to stop it.
Marcus Davenport and injuries
The 25-year-old player had undergone surgery on his right shoulder in January, so he is working on his recovery. After the amputation of part of his finger, he hopes to be fully recovered and available for the training camp of the New Orleans franchise.
Marcus Davenport is expected to be injury-free this season so that he can exploit his talent. According to ESPN’s Mike Triplett, the player is optimistic following his recent surgery and believes that losing a portion of his finger would not be detrimental to him, since he has been playing with his little finger bent for a long time due to the pain.
Last season, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) alum recorded nine sacks, the most in his professional career, during the 11 games in which he played.
The quarterback has seen his NFL career interrupted by injuries, missing a total of 18 games since arriving in 2018 after being selected in the first round of the draft with the 14th overall pick.
His health issues have affected practically every part of his body, including his fingers and toes, shoulder, elbow, pecs, and ankle.
This 2022 season will be the last of his rookie deal, after the New Orleans franchise picked up his fifth-year option for $9.5 million. By 2023, Marcus Davenport will become a free agent.
