World soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo can rest easy knowing his rape case was recently dismissed by Las Vegas District Judge Jennifer Dorsey.
The judge reached this conclusion after the lawyer for Kathryn Mayorga — a woman who claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 — as she acted in “bad faith” by using “stolen” confidential documents about conversations between Cristiano Ronaldo and his lawyers, which makes the judge believe that he irremediably contaminates the case.
Dorsey said in his 42-page ruling that dismissing a case out of hand with no possibility of refiling is a serious penalty, but that the lawyer’s conduct had harmed Cristiano. However, the legal team of the affected woman has until October 20 to appeal the case.
It is not the first time that it has been recommended to dismiss the case, since during October of last year a judge had commented on this possibility considering that Kathryn Mayorga was based in part on documents that had been leaked to the press by “Football Leaks”, which should not have been in her possession.
Some of the leaked information contained conversations between Cristiano Ronaldo and his lawyers, which is protected by law in the United States.
What Is This Lawsuit Against Cristiano Ronaldo About?
Cristiano Ronaldo and Katheryn Mayorga did have a sexual encounter in 2009 and both sides admit to this fact, although the story differs depending on whom you ask. In her lawsuit, Mayorga alleges that she met Cristiano at a club and subsequently went with him and others to his hotel suite, where she was sexually assaulted. Notwithstanding, the player’s lawyers mention that the act was completely consensual.
At that time, the woman went to the Las Vegas police, claiming to have been raped, but the investigation was dropped since Mayorga did not want to identify her assailant by name or say where it took place, according to the police.
Cristiano Ronaldo was aware of the situation in that distant year, and paid the woman to keep quiet. However, years later Mayorga would sue the player, which caused the police investigation to be resumed, but the Clark County district attorney, Steve Wolfson, decided in 2019 not to file any criminal charges since “a lot of time has passed and the evidence cannot show before a judge what Mayorga alleges without room for doubt.”
Although it seems that the case is about to come to an end, it is not the first time that this has been thought, and it will be a matter of seeing if this novel will have a new episode or if the waters will finally calm down for Cristiano Ronaldo regarding this matter in particular.
