Real Madrid won their 14th Champions League in history this Saturday, largely due to the great work of their star goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois.

Thibaut Courtois

Chosen as the best player in the final against Liverpool, the Belgian stopped nine shots on goal by the English team, something that served to hold the 1-0 lead in the duel and send a message to all those critics of his game under the three sticks.

Today, I needed to win a final — for my career, for all the hard work, to put respect on my name because I don’t think I have enough respect, especially in England. I saw a lot of criticism that I was not good enough or whatever.

Thibaut Courtois, in BT Sports, on the respect he claims to deserve.

Throughout his career, and since he arrived at Real Madrid, the 30-year-old goalkeeper has been subject to criticism for his inconsistency, something that he has been gradually overcoming since he took over as a starter for the white team.

In the 2019-2020 campaign, he won the Zamora Award for the goalkeeper with the fewest goals allowed in the Spanish League and this year he was a great architect of Real Madrid’s success, especially in the Champions League, where he stopped 50 shots on goal in 12 commitments.

However, during his beginnings at Atlético de Madrid and after his time at Chelsea, the treatment of the media and analysts, according to him, has not been the fairest. And that’s something that will surely change from now on.

Thibaut Courtois and the Ranking That He Didn’t Like

Even though Thibaut Courtois is used to not being part of many discussions among analysts, one that caught the attention of the Belgian National Team goalkeeper was the list published two months ago by the British magazine, FourFourTwo. In this case, he was not included in the world’s top ten goalkeepers ranking.

They discredited themselves. It is clear that the people who voted on that list do not know anything.

Now, after winning one of the titles that were missing from his great arsenal of trophies, Courtois hopes that things will change a bit, beyond the fact that his arrogance when declaring has earned him many enemies along the way and the discredit of many fans.
