The European Championship 2028 could confirm the venue in the coming hours, since this Wednesday ended the period to present the candidacies to the UEFA.
The football associations of England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales formally submitted their joint bid to host the Euro 2028 to European football’s governing body on Wednesday and are likely to be the final venue for the event, as no other country appeared to have applied.
There was talk of a possible interest of Russia to organize the Euro 2028, after the president of the Russian federation, Alexander Dyukov, declared on the Russian channel Match TV that they intended to host the Euro in the editions of 2028 or 2032.
“We must take the opportunity to host the Euro. It will be played in the Stadiums of the World Cup and we have the infrastructure ready.” The executive added that this Wednesday Russia made the request to the UEFA since “We assume that Russia has the preparation to host competitions of enormous scale. We have the experience.”
However, due to the current problem of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which led FIFA and UEFA to exclude Russian teams from all competition, the request Dyukov talks about could be rejected.
Just this week, The Times portal had published that UEFA had only received the candidacy of the United Kingdom and Ireland jointly, so there would be no opposition and they would be the venue.
The petition to take the organisation of Euro 2028 wrote: “We believe Euro 2028 would be one of the biggest sporting events ever held in the UK and Ireland. This unprecedented partnership of five partnerships offers something special to European football, including the potential for an expanded tournament, and we are passionate about maximising sustainability and legacy benefits for communities across the UK and Ireland.”
Other Candidates to Host Euro 2028
Turkey was also said to be interested in hosting the continental competition, butit has reportedly not submitted the bid to the UEFA. The same happened with Italy, since the country that has the champion selection of the previous edition will apply to host in 2032.
It should be noted that the United Kingdom and Ireland had an interest in hosting the 2030 World Cup, but they changed the plan and now want to organize the continental fair for 2028. This could also pave the way for the 2030 World Cup, which commemorates 100 years since the first edition of this planetary championship, to be played in South America as it was done in 1930.
In fact this tournament could have some changes, as it is expected that it can include 32 teams and not 24 as had been done previously. The UEFA is expected to make a final decision on the venue of Euro 2028 soon, which would be official next Thursday, April 7.
