Forward Gyasi Zardes could be out of the Ohio franchise after having little involvement in the start of the 2022 MLS season. The American center forward of Ghanaian descent had been one of the best elements of the Columbus Crew, justifying his position as a Franchise Player, that is, one of the highest paid on the team. However, in this season that has only been played for four days, Gyasi Zardes has not had much playing time.
He has come on as a substitute in the four games the Crew has played so far, recording a total of 98 minutes played. Despite that short time on the pitch Zardes has a goal to his name. Unfortunately it seems that not having constant participation in his team cost him the call with the United States National Team, since coach Gregg Berhalter presented his list of summoned on March 17 and Gyasi Zardes was not among the 27 names.
According to a report by Tom Bogert, the American journalist who covers MLS, the Columbus Crew is thinking about being able to make a trade for the 30-year-old, as he is in his final year of contract.
This weekend during his participation in the game against the New York Red Bulls, the striker had a big failure in front of goal, making it clear that he is not going through his best moment currently. In the game, Gyasi Zardes received the ball in the area alone in front of the goalkeeper and instead of sending the ball to the goal, he kicked to the side.
Gyasi Zardes Career
Zardes left the Academy of Los Angeles Galaxy and after seeing his potential the team did not hesitate to make a space in the first team. On April 27, 2013 he had the opportunity to begin his adventure in Major League Soccer, in a match that ended with a victory in favor of the Angels team by a score of 2-0 over Real Salt Lake. He managed to score his first goal on May 11 of that same year against the Vancouver Whitecaps and gradually took over the minutes of play.
He moved to the Columbus Crew in 2018, in a trade for Ola Kamara. Since then he has been consistent with the team. In his first season he scored 20 goals in 36 games, being the most productive in his entire career in MLS, since with the Galaxy, in 2014 Zardes participated in 37 games and scored 17 goals.
So far he records 58 goals in 115 appearances with the Ohio State club, where he was crowned MLS Cup champion in the 2020 edition. His good performances in MLS led him to become selected for the Stars and Stripes, where he made his debut in 2015 with Jürgen Klinsmann as coach. He has played 68 games for the U.S. national team, scoring 14 goals.
